I'm participating in the 30 Hour Famine which is an international, hunger-fighting program sponsored by World Vision, one of the world's largest Christian relief and development organizations.

Participants like me recruit family and friends to sponsor us while we go without food for 30 hours. During this time, we will experience hunger firsthand while also learning about hunger and poverty issues through community service activities and educational resources provided by World Vision.

There will be approximately 600,000 of us participating in the United States and our goal is to raise over $8 million dollars to help bring a better life to hungry children and their families worldwide. I would really appreciate any financial support you might give to me as I take this 30 hour challenge, and together we can Make A Real Mark for the better!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ...

As the Head Coach of Living Tower Teens in Aurora, Colorado, I am constantly striving to lead by example. This year our group made a decision to help kids all around the world who are dying of hunger by participating in World Vision's 30 HOUR FAMINE event on February 22nd-23rd of this year.

By going 30 hours without food, they (and I) will get a taste of what so many poverty-stricken children and families feel every day. They'll be pushed out of their comfort zones and gain a new perspective on a world that is desperately in need of help.

This is an awesome opportunity for myself and the teens to put our faith in action. Please help them and me MAKE A REAL MARK on the world by:

1) Praying for us and for the families throughout the world who desperately need relief.

2) Help us meet our group goal to raise $1,000 (my personal goal is to match the group goal via fund raisers and donations - leading by example - as did Christ).

It's through the gifts of caring people like you that the lives of hurting families are changed forever.

Thank you and God Bless you and your family as you support this worldwide movement to save kids' lives.

In His Service,

Karl Rhoads

Dear Friends,

If you live in the United States, then you know we have the blessing of living in the most prosperous country in the world. And while not all of us live in a manner we may prefer, the majority of us have a roof over our head, a bed to sleep in, clean clothes to wear, safe drinking water, and access to grocery stores brimming with a variety of foods. We also have relatively easy access to emergency care, general health care facilities and competent medical professionals. $5 will get you the combo meal at a fast-food restaurant and $16 will get you the latest CD. $25 gets you a day at Six Flags or a couple of movie tickets. $50 gets you a pair of designer jeans or a 13" color TV or dinner for 2 at a nice restaurant or any number of things that we enjoy but may not really need.

The point is, most of us can afford these things and are able to enjoy them from time-to-time because we have the good blessing of living in the United States of America. Even so, did you know that 1 out of every 8 children under the age of 12 in the United States goes to bed hungry every night? Startling, isn't it? But that is nothing compared to the global hunger and poverty facts you may not be aware of. For example, did you know:

1 in 12 people worldwide is malnourished, including 160 million children under the age of 5. In developing countries, 91 out of 1,000 children die before their 5th birthday.
Malnutrition can severely affect a child's intellectual development. (Could this be a contributing factor to the spread of hatred among many 3rd-World countries toward the U.S.?)
Of the more than 6 billion people in the world, 1.2 billion live on less than $1 per day!
The wealthiest 20% of the world's people (that's us) consume 86% of all goods and services, while the poorest 20% consume only 1.3%.
Poverty is the main cause of hunger.
Conflict is another cause of hunger. Worldwide, there were about 21.5 million refugees and displaced people in 1999; largely as a result of wars, political problems, civil conflicts, and social unrest (e.g., Afghanistan, Korea, Somalia, and Sudan). During these emergencies, malnutrition runs rampant. [Source: World Hunger Facts 2002, www.worldhunger.org]
But there is hope! The world produces enough food to feed everyone. The main problem is that many people in the world do not have sufficient land to grow or income to purchase enough food. Fortunately there are organizations like World Vision who work toward relieving hunger and poverty conditions globally.

While the U.S. economy is in it's 3rd straight year of an economic downturn, most U.S. citizens are still enjoying a quality of life that many in this world will never know. Jesus said we will always have poor among us. Jesus also said that it is our task to care for one another, selling all we have and giving the proceeds to the poor if called to do so. Such an action may seem as drastic and as illogical as some other suggestions Jesus gave us (plucking out our right eye or cutting off our right hand), but the point Jesus made was crystal clear. We are to reach out with love and compassion to everyone, especially the poor. And not just in thought, but in deed. We are to take action and act as if it is someone we know and love and care very strongly about; just as Christ knows and loves and cares very strongly about us.

We have an opportunity available to us. We have an opportunity to make a difference. We have an opportunity to save and change lives. Young lives. The lives of children who are not in a position to change their circumstances. Scripture tells us that God determined the times and the exact places where [each of us] should live, and that God did this so that we would seek Him and perhaps reach out and find Him (though he is not far from each one of us). [Acts 17:26 through Acts 17:27 NIV]

I am inviting you to take advantage of the opportunity we have available to us to change lives today! Near and far, temporarily and permanently. An opportunity not only to change the lives of others but to change your very own life as well! I am inviting you to make a real mark in the world you and I live in.

Jesus said we'd always have the poor with us. Do you think that maybe it is that way so that each generation would have the opportunity to come to know what it means to genuinely give of yourself, as Jesus did, so that someone else might have a better life? Do you think that just maybe that is what life is all about; living (and possibly even dying) for others instead of self?

Please either make a donation as outlined in the first message of this thread or join with the approximately 600,000 of us participating in the United States and share in our goal to raise over $8 million dollars to help bring a better life to hungry children and their families worldwide. The most it will cost you is your time. In the process, we just might gain a new appreciation of life.

Thank You and God Bless.

Karl Rhoads
